Base: 6 1/2" Round Materials: 6 pieces @ 22” – ½” flat reed (spokes)6 pieces @ 22” – ½” flat dyed reed (spokes) 30’ - #3 round reed (twining) 11 pieces @ 32” – ¼” flat reed (weavers) 4 pieces @ 32” – ¼” flat dyed reed (weavers) 1 piece @ 32” – ½” flat reed (weaver) 1 piece @ 32” - 3/8” flat reed (weaver) 2 pieces @ 30” - 1/2” flat oval reed (inside & outside rims) 1 piece @ 28” - #6 round reed (rim filler) 1 piece @ 7’ - 11/64” flat oval reed (lashing) 1 - 8” span bean pot handle with wire ears Soak the six natural spokes and #3 round reed for several minutes until pliable. Find the rough sides of the spokes and lay them out horizontally in front of you. With a ruler, mark the centers, 1 3/4” to the right of center, and 1 3/4” to the left of center. Lay the marked spokes out in a spoke like design. Taking a long piece of #3 round reed, crimp and fold it not quite in half. Begin twining around the spokes on the marks making certain your first round makes a 3 ½” circle. Continue twining a total of seven rounds. On the eighth round, add the remaining six dyed spokes one at a time, in between the original six natural spokes. Continue twining three more rounds. End the twiners on the inside of the basket and gently upsett the spokes.
Over and under weave the following rows: Determine where you will want the handle and clip off those two inside spokes level with the top row of weaving. Center the wire ears over these clipped-off spokes and tuck the spokes to the right and left of the handle over the wire ear tails to hold them in position. Fold and tuck all of the outside spokes into the inside of the basket. Clip the remaining inside spokes flush with the top row of weaving. Soak and fit the inside and outside rims. Fit the #6 round rim filler sandwiched between the rims. Single-lash the rims and filler down tightly with the 11/64”. Carefully bend the bean pot handle ends into the ears with pliers. Sign and date your basket. Good job! |
